Baker’s yeast, or Saccharomyces cerevisiae, is the simplest single-cell organism that operates similarly to cells in the human body. Yeast consumes sugar and converts it into energy, creating alcohol and filling with air pockets. It is used extensively in baking and in items such as beer. Some people experience an allergy to baker’s yeast and may feel symptoms of stomach upset, fatigue and patches of yeast in the mouth, among other signs. Contact a doctor with any questions about possible allergies or with any symptoms that persist longer than a week.
Stomach Discomfort
A baker’s yeast allergy may be indicated by signs of upset stomach, constipation and/or diarrhea. In severe cases, the condition may result in leakage of undigested food through the intestines into the bloodstream. This is called "leaky gut syndrome" and should be addressed by a medical professional. The symptoms may include severe abdominal pain, heartburn and indigestion. If these symptoms occur, consult a physician immediately.
Fatigue
One of the symptoms of an allergy to baker’s yeast is fatigue, particularly after consuming items such as bread. If the feelings of fatigue are pronounced and only occur after consuming items that contain brewer’s yeast, it is possible that there is an allergy present. Remove items containing yeast from the diet for a week. If the symptoms improve as a result, an allergy should be discussed with a physician.
Candidiasis
Candidiasis is a yeast infection that is present in the body. It may appear as white patches on the inside of the mouth or on the tongue, or as thick white discharge for women. The lesions in the mouth may be painful. If these symptoms occur, remove yeast items from the diet for a week. If the symptoms do not improve, an allergy should be discussed with a physician.
Eczema
Some cases of eczema, or extreme dry patches on the skin, may be caused by candidiasis. Use a topical lotion specifically meant to treat eczema and remove all yeast products from the diet for a week. If symptoms improve as a result, an allergy should be discussed with a physician.
Generic Allergy Symptoms
Symptoms of baker’s yeast allergy may mimic general allergy symptoms, including sneezing, watery eyes, runny nose and headache. If allergy symptoms persist, consult a physician. Note that these allergy symptoms may be indicative of allergies to environmental as well as food allergens. Only a trained medical professional can determine the cause of general allergy symptoms and can prescribe the appropriate course of treatment.
